Teaching Environments for the Future, Millfields Community School, London E5

The Practice was appointed by London Borough of Hackney to carry out a pilot project under the Government’s Teaching Environments of the Future (TEF) Programme. The aim of the programme was to explore ways in which new teaching methods could be introduced into existing primary schools.

The traditional classroom arrangement was replaced with a series of flexible spaces shared by the year group. The central space is capable of accommodating the whole year group in a theatre-style arrangement with fully integrated IT systems, including interactive white board, tablets and wireless connections.  In this way, the pupils are taught as a year group for part of the lesson, and then disperse into smaller groups.  Break-out spaces are also provided for small groups and one-to-one learning.
