Guardian Newspapers Ltd, Farringdon Road, London EC1R

Phase I comprised a new glass entrance lobby with waiting area and security access control in a 1960s office building. The projecting glass canopy provides a light colourful contrast to the brutal architecture of the original building and presents a fresh contemporary appearance.

Phase II involved an extension of the existing 1960s office building to create 2,500sqm of additional floor space with an exhibition area. Due to rights-of-light restrictions, the building envelope of the extension is modulated into a warped glass wall with inclined columns. The building is designed using computer energy modelling to achieve a low energy building utilising passive cooling and ventilation methods.
